Could this be the ultimate version of Tekken? The sequel has now had a year in Asian arcades, and plenty of time for Namco to listen to the fans and get things spot-on for the home console release.

It wasn’t perfect, and many felt that it was inferior to the game that preceded it. The original was a wildly popular arcade title and PS2 launch stand-out which brought together nearly all of the characters from the previous three Tekken titles. With an unprecedented cast of characters, stunning 3D graphics and dynamic tag-team fighting, Tag Tournament 2 promises much.

Namco proved with Soul Calibur V that they still have the ability to produce a world-class fighting game, it really was completely ace and brought their decade-and-a-bit old game right into the current gen. Tekken Hybrid was another odd release – it featured the same awful, misogynistic Blood Vengeance movie that shared cart space with the 3DS game, a serviceable HD made-over version of 1999’s Tekken Tag Tournament and, best of all, a stunning demo of the forthcoming Tag sequel, which hinted at a bright future for fans of the original dream match tag brawler. Tekken 3D: Prime Edition was a technically adept stab at Tekken on the go, but arrived seemingly in a half-finished state, with bugger all single player mode to speak of. But when left to their own devices, the Artist Formerly Known As Namco had a bit of a shocker at times. On the plus side, Capcom did a terrific job of bringing the King of Iron Fist characters into their celebrated 2D crossover fighter Street Fighter X Tekken. For the customization types, you don't have to jerry rig your own Link or Mario costume, with Namco Bandai adding some Nintendo-specific costume presets in the character customization.The Tekken-verse has been represented in something of a haphazard way as of late. Both of these modes are local, so don't go looking to start pro Mushroom Mode brackets online anytime soon. More fun in theory than execution though, Mushroom Mode matches are so short and not at all customizable, making this mode feel more like a demo for the actual mode more than anything else. Mushroom Battle is your typical 1v1 fight with the addition of mushrooms that shrink or grow you and your opponent along with stars giving you temporary invincibility (and techno and dubstep mixes of classic 'SMB' tunes). It gets a tag twist here with tag combos adding a slowdown effect and some extra power to the ball. Exclusive to the Wii U version of 'TTT2' are two modes-one new, one classic resurrected from 'Tekken 3.' The latter is Tekken Ball, where two players volley a beach ball back and forth, charging it up with special attacks to chip away at their opponent's health, supporting up to four players.
